It was about the post-Civil War period and the political resistance, particularly from Southern states, to the newly adopted constitutional amendments abolishing slavery and guaranteeing racial equality and voting rights for all Americans. ![]() ![]() His first book, in 1970, was about the Civil War and the Republican Party. Our guest, Eric Foner, is a professor of history at Columbia University who's been writing about America's complicated racial history for decades. Today we listen back to an interview from our archives which examines some of the historical roots of institutionalized racism in our country.
